Now that’s no reason to give up. After COVID hit, I had a coworker that was anti-vaccine, and she talked to me about it, because she assumed I was as well. I had mentioned something about how whenever I accidentally drop food on the floor, I eat it as a challenge to my immune system. She expected that that thought carried over to vaccine hesitancy. I later sent her an e-mail telling her that my trick of challenging my immune system, was exactly what vaccines were. Then dove into what vaccines actually are and how they work. She later thanked me, and said that I helped her and her husband finally go and get their shots. It was real cool.
So, sometimes, if you approach it the right way, you can still change peoples minds.

If you’re driving 16 hours a day, then your cargo should probably be going by rail.
Well this is fuel hauling, so multiple stops or loads in a day to service stations. Even if they had rail service set up at the gas station for delivery, rail companies in the US hate small customers like that these days.
Just a couple of years ago in my neighborhood a truck driver was arrested because he offloaded 4000 gallons of gasoline at a gas station, then ran the hose down an embankment next to the station and pumped the remaining 8000 gallons into a creek. He did this because he wanted to go home and didn’t feel like making the rest of his stops. He apparently thought nobody would notice; for bonus points this was right next to a charter school which had to be evacuated while they cleaned up the mess.
He was arrested and sentenced to 20+ years in prison. This is the intelligence level that can get hired as a fuel truck driver (TBF I’m sure they’re not all that stupid).

I’ve herd of people dumping the news papers they had to deliver in order to say they diliverd them. But this is different. Doesn’t the guy need to get the invoice signed at every station?
I think his strategy was to tell his bosses he had run out of fuel and wouldn’t be able to make the rest of his deliveries. But I dunno, the articles about this never said what his thought process was. I drive past this station twice a day and the stink from it was horrible. 8000 gallons is a lot of fucking gas.
This reminds me that years ago I was friends with a bunch of Red Bull girls. Their job was to pick up the Red Bull mini-cooper, fill it with cases of Red Bull and then drive around handing out free samples wherever people were while being attractive. They were very good at the being attractive part, but most days they would just drive to the river, dump the cases of Red Bull in it, and then go home and get high. Their bosses suspected something like this was going on and gave them all Windows Mobile PDAs that tracked their location by GPS. I checked out the tracking app (I was a Windows Mobile developer at the time) and it turned out it just logged their GPS coordinates once an hour into a plain text file. I showed them how to edit the file to make it look like they were driving around – just doing my part saving at least some people from trying fucking Red Bull.

The only way this would be more efficient would for direct piping but this would be less efficient as you would need to create a network and not all stations would want to sign up. The airports in the UK operat this but this was so it’s harder to cut supplies off to airports as they are critical infrastructure.

It was made expensive by letting the oil companies force regulatory capture on it, then tear up all the rails they let could. There were more rails in the US 100 years ago then there are today. Adding stops didn’t take years when there were already rails near by to branch off of. The only reason adding stops is so hard now it because the cut down lines.

One train stop (utility freight, not passanger) is much larger, sure. But how many tons does it process compared to an 18-wheeler? Then, in high density urban centers where you have passenger trains, they normally put them underground. Meaning, the only “land” they take up is about the size of 2 pumps, without the accompanying convenient store. Meanwhile, they remove thousands of cars off the road per day.
It is unquestionably more efficient to run more trains for both freight or passenger. That is why oil and gas hate it. So they buy-in and stack the boards of the rail companies, beg congress for more “regulation and safety”, and cripple expansion with mandatory oversight comittees to slow down whatever gets through. All classic plays.
I think you’re missing the context where this is about resupplying gasoline to fuel stations. So the highway infrastructure is already there and you don’t gain anything by shipping a large load to a central place.
Tbh though if a rail line was built parallel to the road, it doesn’t seem prohibitively expensive to build a pump that can get the gas from a train. Though probably still not financially sensible for the gas station without subsidies or something.
and what about in less urban areas, where there are a higher number of gas stations per person? where you don’t need more than a semitruck of gasoline/desil/propane per week?
Rail can add and remove heavy rail temporary sidings in a matter of hours. When rail was the only powered freight option agricultural sidings would be put down to collect produce in a small area, then picked up and moved down the tracks a couple of miles, rinse and repeat. There are places in the world right now where narrow gauge light rail is placed into fields to collect produce, and picked up and moved multiple times for the same field.
The point is moot. With diesel skyrocketing they won’t be able to drive at all.
Trump is doing something Algore could only have wet dreams about… Trump is ending the Diesel and internal combustion engine (poorly planned acronymy). He might not like it but as soon as he is out and all the refineries are in shambles something has to replace all that. Probably hydrogen, and battery powered vehicles.
Toyota tried hydrogen years ago and it didn’t really catch on. If the global gas economy crashes, I know a lot of locations they could use as hydrogen fuel pumps.
It didn’t catch on because it’s stupid on multiple levels, from infrastructure engineering to realpolitik. Japan as a nation is just desperate for energy independence and pretending the hydrogen will be sourced from the expensive electrolysis and not cheap natural gas refinement was a way to get free government money.
They convinced themselves that all the petrostates, which includes America and Russia, would just abandon their current economic advantage to pay them billions of dollars to rebuild their entire vehicle fuel infrastructure, since they would be the industry leaders and the only major source of engineering knowhow.
Well I’d like to add that Ford did too indirectly and it works. I personally rode both a fuel cell bus and one with a Ford Hydrogen combustion engine and both worked wonderfully. The hydrogen was sourced from electrolysis at a wind turbine. It was a proof of concept. And most relevantly… Toyota is at this again. It actually never quit because it is a smart move. Hydrogen can be easily had from natural gas or water and natural gas or oil is already the normal fuel. So you start at normal, then you switch when normal is gone. It’s expensive but let’s remember, Japan is an island with no oil deposits and a ton of smart people. Ofcourse they would try to figure it out.
It is perfectly functional but it is not clever, unless batteries, even LFP ones, that need no rare resources, are absolutely no option for whatever reason (we are talking about a factor of two more energy needed for doing the same as something battery powered). Hydrogen simply is much more inefficient over the whole cycle, no matter what you do, because of fundamental physics. Smart people can’t rewrite those.
In Europe even the last hold outs and former champions of that technology are realising that.
Let’s say that the goal is to move cars around without polluting and that you have a sun, a planet with wind, water streams, waves and with radioactive materials that can be fused or fissed. But no oil because that pollutes.
Sure, but if you need twice the energy for doing the same, that creates a larger CO2 footprint and higher resource demand (ie also more pollution) than the more efficient alternative, even if everything is based on renewable energies. But that is maybe too theoretical, more practical is the issue that the inefficient technology will struggle to become competitive.

A couple years ago in the US, they switched from largely paper-based driver logging and random checks to an all-electronic tracking system, which was much more difficult to fake. Basically overnight, every rest stop and free truck parking area was jam-packed, and states have had to expand them since. It’s important to note that nothing about the rest requirements actually changed, just how they were enforced. So, logically, before the electronic logging, a large number of truckers were just flagrantly ignoring the law, and it became evident after the fact.
I wonder if there’s a name for that kind of phenomena.

Time flies. I was in the industry, working for one of the first companies to install electronic tachographs into trucks. When I left in 2011, our customers were largely hazardous materials transporters, with a sprinkling of companies that were caught with so many HOS violations that the DOT ordered them to use devices like hours. That was indeed more than a decade ago, but it feels like yesterday.

Yup, my father drives semi’s hauling cargo, and he’s seen and told me of the number of horrific accidents that happen. We live in the same city and if he tells me of a recent accident he’s seen, it almost never is reported through the news, but that could be biased since I don’t search all of the news sites for it. But when a semi ploughs through a line of cars, killing several people on the freeway that were stopped from a previous accident ahead of them, I would expect to see it on most local stations…but it wasn’t. Similar accident with long team haulers, driver fell asleep at wheel hit another semi from behind, destroyed the truck killing both, my father said as he drove by the accident he could see body parts strewn along the road. So, so many stories.
PS all this has me extreme vigilant and paranoid when driving around semi’s on the freeway, especially those people who can’t pass a semi and just hang out next to them matching their speed when I’m trying to get around them too
Like any recurring events it’s boring reporting every deadly event in a city. Like suicides or school shooting. Next your going to want the wether to be news or sporting events to end every news show. Should they hire a different person to explain eather of these things.
Yeah. Nothing scares me more than trucks on the road. I’ve had close calls, heard about many close calls, seen them drive like shit thousands of times. I haven’t seen body parts myself but some of the accidents I’ve seen make me think they were not survivable. I’ve also known people who work on crashed trucks and the stories are pretty disturbing (amount of blood left in the truck, etc).
Trucks generally clog up the highway and it’s clear to me from the many times I’ve seen them ride side by side for miles, preventing anyone from passing them, that they communicate and see non commercial/smaller vehicles as being a problem to unite against. I’ve seen truly unhinged driving from truck drivers. I can sometimes feel for them because it’s gotta be a tough job, on the other hand they can easily kill me and I find myself wondering how much they think about that. We surely don’t need rules relaxed which help abate those kinds of driving problems. We need less trucks on the roads and a better rail system. It’s hard to imagine any of these needs being addressed in the US though. We cannot all even agree that law enforcement shouldn’t be murdering and disappearing US citizens right now… :(

Then trucker insurance goes up and they pass that expense on to shippers and everything gets more expensive.
