If I remember correctly, one of the newborns (she had twins) sucked on her finger attempting to nurse and dislodged the cursed splinter that was keeping her unconscious.
I don’t remember if any explanation was given as to why no one thought of just pulling the damn thing out prior to that. That seems like a pretty fucking solvable problem.
