Black Sails just perfect

Raised by Wolves I was hit and miss on this in many ways, but this intro is great - albeit I think slightly misleading as to its overall tone.

Pennyworth I thought S1 was a bit silly, but what an intro.

No, your interpretation of my comments was that they were confrontation and caustic. That’s a you problem, and you might want to ask yourself why it is your emotional response to my comments was that way.

I didn’t have a strong emotional response as such, just noting the general feedback. It certainly read as incredibly judgemental and sanctimonious to me but I personally didn’t feel attacked by it.

I’m not really surprised, because my comment acknowledges something uncomfortable, and several people here’s respond to that discomfort, is to pretend it doesn’t exist.

Even if the platform is wholly as you describe, people can only really focus on some things. It’s perfectly fine for people to just have their own interests and follow them and cultivate them.

Reminds me of my history day project in high school where I got an A+ from my teachers, but was dragged into the principles office because it made my fellow students ‘uncomfortable’. It was about the history and political influence of the KKK and racism in American society… almost as if despite being the truth, it’s acknowledgement made people VERY uncomfortable… probably because many of those same students were deeply racist.

I really don’t know where you’re getting all these people across the Threadiverse speciifcally berating you for how you use the website. Your top post in this thread was pretty caustic and confrontational and naturally got people’s backs up.

No. I’m complaining about people complaining at me that I don’t curate my feed to be puppies and kittens, and if I don’t, therefore I am a bad person.

Is that something that is happening at scale on here? I’ve never seen people do this. I’ve seen users who point out to people complaining about the /all/ feed to curate their content, but that’s just advise - not complaining.

Yeah, if you curate your feed to not see things, you won’t think they are happening.

Ok please humor me then here. Can you walk me through a situation where an instance would untether itself. One day lemmy becomes super popular. People notice it as a platform to get information on. Millions of views an hour. Peter Thiel is paying chinese click farms to post manosphere content in popular lemmy communities. Musk is linking “no kings 5.0” lemmy posts to his followers on X who are brigading the comments. The moderators of the most popular lemmy.world communities are Marvel executives and Billionare Pedophiles.

I think this is so ridiculous as to essentially constitute fantasy. Lemmy.world, the largest Lemmy instance has about 40% of the active userbase (and declining slowly as a share of overall users) out of a pool of about 40k users. I don’t think that’s sufficient if Lemmy.world tried to cut itself off from every other network, they’d shed a lot of users who have people and communities they interact with outside of the main instance.

If Lemmy became popular, it across the instances would become popular. Not just one instance.

If for some reason a single instance did become hyperpopular and obnoxious to interact on, the lemmy software would still be accessible to rebuild another ecosphere elsewhere.

So now we abandon it and leave. What does that mean as far as protecting that instance from that same thing happening?

You know, I think people have many different interests and reasons for why they use social media platforms. Some are just hobbyists and use it for those purposes and thus curate and control a feed that emphasises their interests. Is that bad?

Because it isn’t a singular space. An instance that goes bad can be tethered from the rest of the wider network, and abandoned, leaving it on its own.

I can start an instance right now. But that doesn’t mean it will have any kind of importance. If I can create new spaces, and let’s say it grows, wouldn’t the problems from the first instance just carry over.

I don’t know what you mean by “problems with the first instance”.

Well there will always be instances that defederate almost nothing. There are now.

You can speculate another platform might come up that some hardcodes in it the impossibility to deplatform other instances, but all I’m saying is that Lemmy and Piefed will not do it.

But even then, it’s a stretch because the tools required to remove seriously illegal content are the part of the same tools that would function as defederation tools. So it probably can’t be hardcoded out.

It is 100% impossible lol. Rimu won’t do it. Lemmy devs won’t do it.

They can block for themselves. This for me comes down to a thing I have not talked about in a awhile but what I would like to see in the federation. I would like no defederation or unreversable domain blocking.

This will never ever happen.
