A parenthetical is more likely to be used in normal discourse than a word bookended by colons
As someone who gets annoyed every time a text smiley like :) gets automatically converted to an emoji 🙂, I think that having a total separation from common sentence usage makes sense.

I got the emoji list up all the time on Teams when I didn’t want it. Apparently I use brackets a lot.
This is much better IMO.
