I cannot read unless I know what each word is. I can skim something and look for keywords and get a gist but to really understand something I am processing at least parts of every word in my inner voice.
I can’t skim. I also can’t read a text out loud and answer questions to it, I might remember a word here and there, but I have to read so fast that I’m pretty much occupied with transforming words into sounds. I guess I’m lucky that pronunciation of German words never depends on the following word
Reading text outloud for me does take more brain power. I’m reading it in my inner voice and now I have to translate that to spoken words.
I see “Elephant”, I say “Elephant” in my inner voice, I speak “Elephant” in voice. It’s an extra step.
I’d be like you and not really comprehending what I am reading if I just saw the word and verbally said it. I wouldn’t really comprehend the meaning as much.
