I guess, but things like community gardens get people together, to communicate, share ideas and help each other out. Modern capitalism attempts to eradicate community and keep the individual alone, stuck inside, easily manageable and placated with tailored content online.
Building community seems like an important bit of defiance, even if it doesn’t ‘scale up to industrial levels’. It depends what your goal is here, and I don’t think the ‘goal’ of community gardens was ever to feed an entire society.

But we had better community in the past and still felt the crushing weight of capitalism. Fighting back means fighting back. Community gardening is the left side of the meme.

For example: Handing out free food to school kids on its own doesn’t ‘fight back’ but the Black Panthers used the activity to garner wider community support and good will for their other efforts. Building trust and garnering public sympathies is necessary for effective community organizing.
