Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What is the fantasy book/series everyone should read?English
9·13 days agoI would recommend Jack Vance’s Dying Earth series as well as his Lyonesse Trilogy.
A bit more than just enough and a bunch more than too few.

5·1 month agoIt is never a good idea to put yourself in a position where you have legal liability and could be sued. Damages and even just the cost of hiring a lawyer could bankrupt you.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Can a reasonable person genuinely believe in ghosts?English
1·2 months agoIt is disturbing when people take this kind of mysticism seriously. I could say a lot about this but it may be best just to refer to the words of Carl Sagan:
“I have a foreboding of an America in my children’s or grandchildren’s time – when the United States is a service and information economy; when nearly all the manufacturing industries have slipped away to other countries; when awesome technological powers are in the hands of a very few, and no one representing the public interest can even grasp the issues; when the people have lost the ability to set their own agendas or knowledgeably question those in authority; when, clutching our crystals and nervously consulting our horoscopes, our critical faculties in decline, unable to distinguish between what feels good and what’s true, we slide, almost without noticing, back into superstition and darkness…
The dumbing down of American is most evident in the slow decay of substantive content in the enormously influential media, the 30 second sound bites (now down to 10 seconds or less), lowest common denominator programming, credulous presentations on pseudoscience and superstition, but especially a kind of celebration of ignorance”

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•How do you know youre getting burnt out at work?English
16·2 months agoOne red flag for me us too much multitasking. If I have too many things I am working on and none of them are getting completed eventually switching between tasks becomes so disruptive I cease to make any progress on anything. I fight this with focus and prioritization: find the things that are most important and focus on them until closure.

Mildly Infuriating@lemmy.world•Cold and expensive vs hot, cheap and eco-friendly: the contrasting histories of home heating in the UK and SwedenEnglish
11·2 months ago“Without the option of “clean” natural gas, Sweden turned to district heating – an idea which had originated in New York in the 19th century. But Sweden committed to it in a big way during the 1960s and ‘70s, deciding it was the best way to meet the heating needs of the 1 million homes now being built. This decision shaped the way homes in Sweden are heated: today, some 90% of its multi-family apartment blocks are connected to district heating systems – with heat distributed from power plants (usually on the edge of cities) as hot water via a network of pipes.”

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•How could we go about making a jurisdiction where advertising is illegal?English
103·2 months agoBanning ads seems like overkill. Going after deceptive practices aggressively and having strict regulation makes more sense IMHO.
