There is definitely some truth to what you’re saying, but my point is that those aren’t conflicting with the technology working. There are many scholarly refereed papers on transformer performance and generational improvement on standardized metrics. I don’t see the value in conflating something working with it being good or ethical. There is a gap between utility and hype, yes. That doesn’t mean it doesn’t work, and the inexorable negativity that comes invariably to comments recognizing this simple truth undercuts actual critical feedback.

I think it is so strange people say stuff like this as though there aren’t objective metrics showing it does. We don’t have to like the billionaires using it to subjugate people, or the energy and water consumption, or the theft of copyrighted materials to be honest about the technology.

It does work. As far as ml models go, since backpropagation was implemented in training, transformers have become extremely capable.

In “room and board”, board refers to food coverage. The root is “bord” which is old English for table. But this word actually predates English, I believe from proto Germanic as it is also cognate in other Germanic languages. The only reason I learned this is because I’ve been learning Norwegian for several years, where table is “bord”.

Many things leap from the page when you learn a new language. For example, admittedly strange that this never dawned on me, but I simply never even considered that “maybe” is “may” and “be”. That is of course obvious, but it has always just been in my lexicon as the whole word and its meaning. When I realized the Norwegian “kanskje” was literally “kan” and “skje“ or “can happen” my mind was blown.

Agreed. I used to use fancy keyboards with cherry clears and orings, then I realized how nice it is just to pick up the laptop and sit anywhere. No turning back. And even at my desk I use only one monitor, because I have just one set of eyes.

First, that actually is how language works. Meaning is given to words by consensus and consensus alone. Generally, since it came to widespread usage in the modern lexicon it means exactly as they described.
