I started drinking white tea recently. It’s nice to change things around

Technology@lemmy.world•Wikipedia has banned AI-generated text, with two exceptionsEnglish
3·2 months agoI think it’s more nuanced than that. It all depends on what you’re asking it to do (and a bit of luck that it complies as intended). Using a thesaurus can also either improve or worsen a text.
I’m not a native English speaker, but have lived in an English speaking country for many years now. I still make mistakes, but there is no point in me asking for help with English writing as my mistakes are subtle and I don’t realise I made them. Getting an AI to detect clumsy use of English and grammar mistakes has worked quite well for me before publishing reports. While I don’t always use the correct grammar while writing, I’m very capable of judging whether an LLM suggested improvement is actually better.
Of course, letting an LLM rewrite a whole text is much riskier in terms of the original meaning getting lost. But that’s not the only way to use it.

Technology@lemmy.world•Firefox 148 introduces the promised AI kill switch for people who aren't into LLMsEnglish
4·2 months agoI have tried some of the popular LLMs a few months back when I had to digitise an old policy document from which only an old scan still existed. I had trouble reading it.
The results varied wildly. OpenAI was really poor at it while Gemini got it right completely. I was quite impressed. ABBYY FineReader is supposed to be the best non-LLM software for OCR, but it doesn’t come near the performance of Gemini
There are differences, but also similarities right? Artificial insemination doesn’t mean voluntary. Swap the species and you’d call the same acts rape.
The vegan making the comparison is likely against rape, as well as artificial insemination of cows.
What makes comparing it deserving of bashing and psychopathic?
Most content about veganism on Lemmy or Reddit is about bashing veganism. It’s honestly really disappointing. This is where conservatives and progressives find each other.
Very good explanation on why it’s not a personal choice.
This is how I explain it to people: The animals we eat aren’t able to stand up for themselves, so some people try to do that for them. Kust like how activists do this for dogs or orangutans. It’s not against personal choice, but about trying to protect those who are hurt by the choices of others.
Besides, we all share the same planet and animal agriculture has a big impact on it. So it’s not like our choices don’t affect others.
Inside Excel?

Let’s say a mouse that is competitive in terms of utility. Function isn’t allowed to follow form in Apple devices; looks are too important. And with that mindset, manufacturers that prioritise function more will always be able to deliver better performing products.
This isn’t a generalizable rule or anything, especially where the competition is limited. And where form doesn’t suffer, Apple is able to do really well, such as with their ARM chips.
