Boiling broccoli.

It’s just bad, and wrong. I know lots of people who don’t like broccoli, and when I ask why it’s usually because that’s the only / main way they’ve had it. For me it’s the opposite, I love broccoli, it’s my favorite vegetable.

Acceptable methods of preparation, in descending order:

• pan-fried, hard. High heat, add a good oil and immediately follow with roughly chopped (e.g. halve the large “flowers”) broccoli so the oil doesn’t burn. It will sizzle and crack like crazy for a couple of minutes. In the end, you should have brown-almost-black, caramelized flowers/stems, that are still very crisp on the inside. If you want to make a sauce, set aside or make simultaneously and only combine towards the end, so you don’t cook the broccoli until soft after frying.
• oven-roasted. High heat, again in the oven until almost blackened in spots. It’s almost, but not quite as good as pan-fried, but that seems to be common with oven-roasting. You likely loose a lot of the inner crispness. But, no oil spritzes.
• blanched, shortly. IDK why you’d ever really want this, unless it’s to make the color pop. Way worse than oven roasted, way better than cooked or steamed.

Note this only applies to fresh broccoli, the frozen stuff is unsalvageable.

Or just configure all the machines to auto-update from the flake at the repo. Doing this for my VMs. I have a CI machine that builds my pinned flake from the repo tip, and about 30 other VMs check nightly if the repo tip has moved, and if so, rebuild from the new tip; which, thanks to the CI machine, means just downloading and activating a new generation, nothing compute heavy.

Finally. Been saying for years, NixOS is the obvious choice for a gov distro.

Related, but the amount of tech and/or privacy adjacent youtubers I have seen complain about ads, about what they’re doing to be less susceptible, how this or that change is TOO much, and so on if baffling. JUST USE AN ADBLOCKER. There’s always one comment pointing that out, with a derailed conversation below, but most of the comments will be “actually, if you repeatedly close then reopen a YouTube video for 10-15 times, it will not show the ad on the next open!” with a million “don’t tell, now Google is gonna patch!” replies. I wish I was joking.

If you don’t use an Adblocker, get one, NOW. It takes 30s. If you think “it’s not that bad”, install it anyways and give it a try for a week. Disable it. See if it’s really “not that bad”, lmao.

How about only apply to non-FOSS software? Most hobby projects used not just by the author altend to be FOSS, and businesses can decide to go FOSS, making their software independently auditable by anyone, or go through certification.

• MuseScore 4 is a (the!) free music notation software. It is genuinely fantastic. It’s also a lot of fun, if you know some notation basics and want to play around.
• Darktable is a Raw photo editor in the vein of Lightroom. Except where lightroom is sleek, polished, user friendly and Adobe (🤮), Darktable is FOSS, and clearly so both in the design and functionality: it could easily make a UX designer cry, but if you’re willing to give it a try, there does not exist a more potent raw editor on this earth. Lightroom is a toy in comparison. (Now whether you need that is another question… But I’ve been using it for more than 10 years, and am still finding new, incredibly useful sub-menus, drop-down contexts on hidden sliders,…)
