That’s honestly…way more conscious of the reality of AI than I would’ve expected from Wizard of Id.

Technology@lemmy.world•Microsoft wants Edge to automatically open by default every time you turn on your Windows 11 PCEnglish
1·4 days agoI honestly feel like I’m doing Linux wrong, because with one exception it’s been seamless. No driver issues, no framerate problems, no game compatibility problems for anything I play. I thought I was having issues with Bluetooth dropping randomly, but I’ve tracked that down to a hardware issue with the antenna.
The exception is that my Wi-Fi chipset has a bad driver that I think causes it to sleep after every packet, meaning that my Wi-Fi speeds are so slow that a speed test times out. This isn’t an issue for me because I was planning to be hardwired anyway, but if you’re going to put it on a mobile device you should check your Wi-Fi hardware; I think a fix is coming soon, though.
In fairness, I’m not a cutting edge guy (I mostly play stuff a few years after it’s released, patient gamers style) and I don’t play many games that have any kind of anti-cheat. But I regularly get three-digit framerates on highest graphics settings.

1·4 days agoI’m not interested in getting into a distro war. I think we should encourage people to get into the ecosystem via whatever user-friendly means possible. Once they’re in, then they’ll be a lot more likely to try out another distro.

Technology@lemmy.world•Microsoft wants Edge to automatically open by default every time you turn on your Windows 11 PCEnglish
16·4 days agoWhen I bought a new gaming PC a few weeks ago (where I live the pre-builts that were assembled before rampocalypse are still at a reasonable price until the stock runs out), I asked if I could get it cheaper without the Windows 11 license. The sales guy said, “well, it’s already installed.” I told him, “I’m literally going to take it home and wipe it for Bazzite.” He said, “good call, but seriously, they’re practically giving these licenses away, so even if we could it would only take like $20 off the purchase price.”
Kind of a bummer to waste that $20, but honestly the satisfaction of hitting “reformat” on a brand new, slop-infused, bloatware-infested, data-harvesting-ready SSD and watching it all vanish before I even used it was almost worth the money.
EDIT: Not to mention, I got back a significant amount of space. 15+ GB.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Why does the US put so much emphasis on high school and also nostalgia for high school?
22·9 days agoI don’t think I see anyone else saying it: Because High School was the last school for the vast majority of people.
87% of adults graduated high school. 60-70% of high school graduates enroll in a college or university program. So that means that 52% or more of people in the US go to college. Obviously that’s massively location-dependent, but it’s just not true that the “vast” majority of people don’t go to college. It’s about half.
Maybe you’re talking about historically? But it’s been a long time since any percentage you could call a “vast” majority left school after secondary. Certainly the majority or a very large minority of Americans alive today had some college or trade school education.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•If someone opened a store and just sold stuff at cost, which undercuts every other competitors by alot. Would this not for the big corps to come way down on their prices?
1·13 days agoHe simply realized that the markup on drug prices was so mind-bogglingly absurd (oftentimes over 2500% markup) that he could undercut the market by thousands of dollars and still make a tidy 15% profit.
When the libertarians tell you fan fiction about the “invisible hand of the free market,” this is what they mean. And the fact that it took this long for someone like Cuban to come along should tell you how viable a strategy it is.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•What is likely to happen when/if trump dies?
2·15 days agoIn my opinion, the best case scenario is that that happens, the GOP dies (it happened with the Whigs!) and a new, more progressive party (maybe DemSoc) becomes relevant to the left of the Democrats. The Dems become the new Conservatives (since they basically are anyway) and the left wing becomes the moderate left. The overperformance of Abughazeleh (even though she didn’t win) and the shocking effectiveness of Mamdani now that he’s in office make this slightly less impossible than it would’ve seemed even a year ago.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•If everybody in the world agreed to do so, what would you rename the twelve months?
3·16 days agoSandra 2: Bega Boogaloo
assumed the vast majority of people still wanted it to be better for everyone.
You’re still right. They’re just propagandized into believing that what’s better for a tiny minority of rich people will make things better for everyone else.

4·16 days agoI mean, generally I agree, but what gives me pause here is that Graber is basically moving into a focus on federation full-time. A leadership change like this would be a perfect moment to pivot away from atproto and into a more walled garden, but Graber isn’t even leaving the company.
This could just be theatrics, but it’s at least interesting that they aren’t taking this opportunity to close it all off when they absolutely could.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•What is likely to happen when/if trump dies?
12·16 days agoThere is a long list of politicians who have tried to do the Trump thing ever since the stupid escalator. Florida Governor DeSantis made a tiny little bit of headway that ultimately collapsed around him, Marge Greene has been setting herself up as the post-Maga maga leader, and Ted Cruz of Texas has been trying for the longest time to position himself as heir apparent of the current GOP, but there hasn’t been anyone who has been able to capture the same spectrum of blind devotion to grudging acceptance that Donald Trump has somehow managed to unite into the Maga movement.
JD Vance certainly isn’t it, and while he’ll certainly get the Oval Office when Trump dies before completing his term, I think his presidency will be fairly unremarkable and rather short, and afterwards he’ll move into private equity consulting or some such and never be seen in politics again.
But without Joe Rogan and Charlie Kirk, and with a ton of the other influencers either jumping ship or losing face, I don’t think we’ll see the same focus on a single candidate again. Since 2016, we’ve had a historical alignment of domestic influence and foreign interference that focused on Trump specifically, and he has used that (as he always does) to build the Trump brand and only the Trump brand. Nobody else can use it; not even Don Jr., who has tried dipping his toes in and mostly been ignored.
So I think the answer is, the maga cult sputters and dies. Maybe it sticks around long enough to poison the waters for a couple more election cycles, but it won’t elect another president. The best case scenario, in my mind, would be maga breaking away from the GOP and trying to field candidates for a few years that become spoilers.
Either way, the Republicans will eventually put the mask back on and try to pretend like nothing ever happened (though I can’t possibly predict whether that’ll work. My gut says yes, but maybe that’s just me being cynical).
I’m a US citizen. Back in my country kind of sucks. We’re lucky to be able to pull up stakes and go, though, so we did; we’re in New Zealand right now.
It’s late summer in Auckland, and the weather is fantastic. I didn’t realize that I had been getting headaches back in the US due to clenching my jaw until I got here and they went away over the course of a month. The people here are invariably kind and friendly. Government services are actually funded. The infrastructure isn’t falling apart. I have had a grand total of two, maybe three, bad meals in the three-ish months I’ve been here, and I made one of them; all the rest have been delicious.
There are certainly problems in New Zealand, I’m not oblivious to that. But they’re different problems and on a radically different level.
