Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Who do you think was history's greatest villain?
3·4 days agoTIL Douglas Adams published the real name and address of presumably, either a friend or a former school rival, then only changed it upon request.
In comparison to the rest of the thread, it’s nothing, but that’s fucked up.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•How do you feel about a 25 year old dating a 46 year old?
10·6 days agoHow would I feel? Uncomfortable. What would I do with that feeling if it’s based on exclusively my knowledge of their ages? Nothing.
When I was 28, I dated a 43 year old and it was a fine relationship. He agreed to stay in shitty hotels when we traveled because it was all I could afford and I didn’t want to take his money. He was definitely more emotionally mature and experienced than I was though and that’s what made us ultimately incompatible.
When it works, I bet it works well.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Does purchasing a game on GOG.com really grants ownership of the game and not a license to use it?
1·6 days agoI’m not sure how you’re getting to those conclusions, but it doesn’t make sense to me and clearly my conclusions aren’t making sense to you. Have a good night.

1·6 days agoAnd these are the terms of use for that purchase. If I sign a contract with a party magician for them to come and perform, and then violate the terms of the contract, they can stop providing their services without being in breach of contract. If those terms include that you don’t later publish videos of them on social media and then you do, you open yourself up to being sued, even though after the service has been provided you are no longer receiving an active benefit.

1·6 days agoYour consideration is being able to access the game.
Edit: I brain farted, and think I mixed up terms. Aleatory contracts are still valid, the issuers just have to withstand higher scrutiny if challenged.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What are the toughest battles you have fought or are fighting?
5·13 days agoI’m sorry you’re going through that. My mom died over twenty years ago, when I was twelve (so I didn’t have any estate management responsibilities), and it’s sometimes difficult to deal with wanting to ask her advice or wanting to have a person whose first priority was me, irrespective of our relationship (I know not all mothers are like that, but mine was, and my much older sisters and their friends agree, so it’s not just kid-glasses. They also readily share unpleasant aspects of her personality, so it’s also not a wariness to speak ill of the dead).
It does get easier, and you learn to depend on yourself, any siblings or old friends who remember her and other supportive friends who have been through similar situations.
That’s probably survivorship bias
/s everyone knows the real preparation is community building
Linen and simple cuts
Tbh, I’ve been given a lot of wool blend socks over the years by someone telling me that they’re perfect for daily wear (my sister’s great), but my feet always end up grosser than when I wear 95+% cotton socks. It could just be me, but cotton is definitely my choice if I’m not hiking or something.
the kind of guy who might be at a real risk to bight trump if stuck close to him for too long
Hmmm. Bite or fight? Both is good.
Wool socks give me smelly feet, but cotton ones don’t. Wool is good for sweat in a survival scenario, because it can still keep you warm if it’s wet, but that’s the opposite of what I want for my feet in dress shoes in an office.
Many of them were probably wearing half or three quarter socks. Hopefully most, but even so, they’re almost never made of cotton or a material that actually handles sweat well.
I’m of two minds here: it’s just a body, everyone’s got one, no need to be ashamed of it or hide it; but people can also be reasonably distracted by seeing someone’s body at most workplaces (strip club bartenders excluded, for example) when they’re not expecting to, because they aren’t commonly displayed.
There’s also the factor of necessity: in extremely hot environments, people need to cover less of their body (unless they want to fully cover themselves with materials designed for it, like Bedouins, but a lot of people don’t want to do that and that’s a reasonable choice). In that situation, or in places like the beach, people should expect to see more of others’ bodies, and they are “at fault” for getting distracted.
To be clear, I think you behaved perfectly normally and well in that story. I was just thinking about the concept of nudity or near nudity at work in general.
How did they manage to make such an inherently attractive person so consistently frumpy?

Fun fact: no!
I mean, I’d argue the emoluments clause should apply here, because poly market isn’t limited to Americans, but given that the sources of counter bets are not really public, I can see why it might not. Damn, I guess the ToS of polymarket?
