Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•If your child came out to you, how did you adjust?English
14·8 days agoQueer parent with a queer kid here. I’ve been on both sides of this situation.
The best thing you can do is be openly and actively supportive of your child. Leave them with no doubt that you love them, you recognise them and are happy for them and that you will support them.
After that, just listen to what they need.
If you can do that, the rest doesn’t matter. You will absolutely fuck up and say the wrong thing at some point. That’s fine. It’s inevitable. What’s important isn’t avoiding the situation, but how you respond after. If they know that you love them, that you’re trying your best, and you can learn from your mistakes, that’s what matters.
Your kid will tell you what they need, even if it’s just the space to work out what they need. Just listen :)

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What's a scientific fact that sounds made up but is 100% real?English
28·17 days agoIt depends what you mean. Testosterone makes a difference. It improves blood oxygen levels and cardio capacity, and it increases strength (it’s a steroid).
And depending on the context, the difference is larger. Men tend to have stronger hand grip than women for example, to the extent, there is very little overlap. But if you look at leg strength, the distributions are different, but they overlap significantly. And when you start to look at things like long distance endurance events, the distributions are even closer.
However, none of those things align with “men” or “women”. They align with “the dominant sex hormone in your body”, and your capacity shifts as your sex hormones shift.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What's a scientific fact that sounds made up but is 100% real?English
52·18 days agoThat’s not an answer, because if life is common, then the chance of us being the first is minuscule.
Lets say that life can only form around main sequence G type stars (ie, like our sun). There is no reason to believe this is true, but lets say it is for this example. The universe is 14 billion years old, and the sun is 4.5 billion years old. Lets round it to 4 billion years old when life first formed.
Now, the earliest G type stars formed approximately 1 billion years after the universe formed. Lets say that life can only develop when those stars were at least 4 billion years old. That puts the earliest possible scenario where life formed at 5 billion years after the universe formed, and that was 9 billion years ago. Low balling it, there are approximately 7 billion g type main sequence stars current in our galaxy.
All together, that means the chance of us simply being the first is very low, and if we are the first, then life isn’t common, and if life isn’t common, the underlying reason for that is the answer to the fermi paradox.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•can i still consider myself to be a valid asexual?English
2·26 days ago“Wrong” doesn’t have meaning in this context. Someone is giving you a label to try and describe a personal experience that they have access to that you don’t. The label they choose to communicate that to you is subjective. Because it’s subjective, other people can (and likely will) disagree with their self applied label. But that’s part of the process that impacts them when they choose and use the right label.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•can i still consider myself to be a valid asexual?English
31·26 days agoAs much as you may think otherwise, sexuality and identity labels aren’t objective. They are subjective and self applied, because it doesn’t matter what label you pick, or how clear cut you think it is, there is someone, somewhere, who uses it differently. There is no single “truth” when it comes to these things.
So yeah, picking a label that helps you navigate the world is the smart choice. Because if you’re trying to pick a label based on some objectively true definition, you’ll fail before you begin, because there is no such thing in this context

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•can i still consider myself to be a valid asexual?English
71·27 days agoThat’s why sexuality labels and identity labels are best when they’re self chosen. People get to decide for themselves what helps and what fits. And part of that whole process is dealing with other people offering their opinions, whether you asked for them or not. That stuff impacts the labels people choose and/or the labels people choose to share.
Maybe don’t get a reverse prince albert then :P
