Random: I remember seeing um… mention that they regret choosing a name that has punctuation in it because it makes things worse for search engine optimization reasons, but that it was all worth it anyway to overhear the mass confusion around staff members at a music festival talking to each other over their walkie talkies about the artists “um…” and “sumthin sumthin”.

Imagine something like:

STAFF 1: Who’s next on the main stage?
STAFF 2: Uh… um…
STAFF 1: …um what?
STAFF 2: And then it’s… sumthin sumthin.
STAFF 1: Wait, who??? I need to know exactly!

Good for anyone who likes that version, but I could never get into it. It is okay, but will always pale in comparison to the raw emotions of the original, in my opinion.

Of all the remixes I posted to that community, the one that I see that I do not actually like better than the original mix is a particular Christmas variation that I posted on Christmas. It is effectively the exact same thing as the original mix, just with the melody of the main synth changed to sound like the “Jingle Bells” melody. Which does not make it bad by any means. On the contrary, I think it achieves what it was reaching for rather well. But more often than not, I am not particularly in the mood to listen to Christmas-themed music, and as such, I would prefer the original.

I mostly listen to electronic music, where remix culture is huge. There are countless examples of remixes that I prefer to the original mix. Some of these examples, I dislike the original mix but do like a particular remix. And sometimes, I do still like the original mix but I just like a remix even more .

I am having a hard time converting this to a JPG that is smaller than the GIF. Like you say, I think the fact that it is a static black-and-white image plays into the strengths of the GIF format and sidesteps the problems people usually experience with animated GIFs. The biggest downsides of the GIF format are a large file size for animated images and the fact that it only supports limited colors.

What is the story here? Man trains his dog to retrieve his cane any time he drops it, but the dog figures this means it can go around town stealing canes from strangers and bring them to its owner to receive a reward for each one?

For all its faults, GIF is a widely supported format. And its biggest fault (file size) mainly applies to animations, not static images like this.

All that said, sure, this image would probably be more efficient as a JPG.

Why would it matter who it was that contributed the code?

Something similar to this concept is great for enterprise environments. Imagine an employee at home using a basic thin client that just connects to a “mainframe” of a server that exists on premises and is running an individual VM or whatever for each employee’s thin client. That is already a widespread concept. But for a home PC, with that VM being run on the OS manufacturer’s servers? No, I don’t think anybody should want to pay for that.
