On the topic of pokemon, between the various games and the anime, there are a lot of places that are just plain awesome, and I seem to recall plenty of people that live in the wilderness perfectly happily. It seems like a paradise world, with enough space for everyone to have wilderness if they want it, city life if they want that, etc.

My anthropology knowledge is pretty paltry, but isn’t that the opposite of how humanity spread? One slow expansion at a time, as a tribe grew too big and then split and settled in the next valley over seems to be more in line with how much of it worked. Some expansions may have been quite different, no doubt, like oceania or the east asia -> north america -> south america journey, but on average you would be relatively near other human tribes, right?

I’m not the most familiar with hardware level stuff. With the security disabled as in the article, can a malevolent actor rewrite firmware or leave the equivalent of an undetectable rootkit on your hardware? It would be mildly amusing to see an entire generation of pirates fuck up here, but also reminds me of the arguments regarding the intel cpus having a secondary, unknown firmware in the form of the management thingamajig.

Oh, they understand. They want to sit behind the safe wall of societal expectations that you won’t beat their face in, and make the jokes because they want to spread their hate and for you to be shocked, not for you to laugh at something stupid and absurd. That’s the real difference. If I tell a joke that touches on something like race or religion, it’s because the absurdity of it is funny. When they tell them, they believe the joke and the ‘reality’ of it is why it’s funny.

I mean, roommates are definitely a form of horror. For every well adjusted person out there, several exist that never learned to clean up after themselves or think of how what they do impacts another person.

Hell, there are a lot of people who actually take delight in the suffering of others. Imagine trying to convince your roommate to do the dishes more than once a month and they’re laughing at you.

It was weird learning how many of the random words I had in my vocabulary were actual foreign words, not even loan words but just had been used by neighbors who had likely had immigrant parents or were immigrants themselves. Ciao, sayonara, adios, ohayo (which I seriously thought was just, “Oh! Hi! Oh!” as if it was an exaggerated ahoy)…

Ah, yes, thank you. Mirepoix. But no, I recognize it in tons of dishes at restaurants I’ve tried over the years. Maybe they all source their dishes from one source, but it sure seems like everything has been basted with a sauce using that combo, or the side dishes have been steeped in it. I’m not saying every food, just a ridiculous amount.

I’m pretty sure I made it from elementary to nearly the end of high school without having to go at school. There’s just way too much opportunity for people to fuck with you when you’re in a stall.

To be fair, road trips ARE a thing, and it’s not just because of cost and random religious factors. Sometimes seeing the countryside is really cool in addition to the destination’s reason.

The flights are probably a mixed bag. There are also cases where they just open up the lines and let everyone through without passing through security screening. It’s happened a few times, though I’ve never gotten so lucky.
