I didn’t even know of the existence of those! Thanks for the new knowledge, I guess they never really took off much?

Kind of cool that as storage media on tape shrunk in physical size and grew in data storage the term cassette started to change use in shorthand parlance.
It’s a generic term but yeah to everyone nowadays a cassette would be one of these: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cassette_tape
That wiki article has more examples in it of older ones too and competitors if you feel like a little random reading.
Heard that dude loves cocaine.
In the USA military I think all combat pilots carry a knife afaik. At least the ones flying attack planes going on missions where they might get shot down.
It’s about $3.69 to $3.99 right now around Cincinnati, OH. Gas in California is probably (if not actually) the highest priced gas in the country.
But yeah the cost of everything going up since Trump took office has sucked. This war in Iran feels totally pointless, we’ve managed to hurt ourselves and kill a bunch of innocent people and all for what? Like honestly it’s beyond idiotic, it’s cruel and literally weakens our position on the world stage.
There is zero incentive for Iran to allow free transit through the strait of Hormuz, now or in the foreseeable future. Even when this all ends it’s not going to go back to like it was before.
Sorry went on a tangent there but yeah gas prices being this high because our president and current administration are fucking morons is so dumb.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Is cryptocurrency good for anything?
7·28 days agoTo be fair there’s a lot of crypto currency that was/still is a scam. Also I’d argue that BTC, and crypto in general, still is being treated as a security that’s backed by thin air. Ie: it’s a speculative asset that doesn’t actually have any value.
There’s nothing really stopping BTC from crashing hard. It’s so wild to me how people treat it.
I could have bought bitcoin too when it was worth pennies but there was no way to know which crypto the whales were going to bet on for the pump and dump. It’s a missed opportunity but rest assured there’s plenty of universes where Bitcoin amounted to nothing.
Damn, I wonder if that person is legit schizophrenic or something like that
You are missing the story … What happened when she came back?

Technology@lemmy.world•AI Used to Promote Non-Existent Evacuation Flights From the Middle EastEnglish
11·1 month agoAs a dirty American, we just borrow schadenfreude from German usually in my experience.
There are English phrases that approximate it - like “taking enjoyment in another’s misery” but not really a word, at least one I can think of.
Or maybe a machine to do my laundry
Oh boy, do I have news for you!
Alt joke >!You mean a wife? !<

6·2 months agoNah bruh it’s cool just run the same prompt again and again and again, surely sooner or later it will be right. In no way is it going to do the opposite and just keep degrading with each output reading from the last one.
Semi related - You know, honestly, all AI is showing me is how absolute bullshit so many jobs are that we have in the corpo world. Like, at some point we’re gonna have an AI write a thing for an AI to read and file and there will be a little loop and then what the hell is the point of the job in the first place if it’s just machines sending things back and forth that’s just business class white noise.
I mean that’s literally the joke. Haha you thought you were going to see one thing but you saw another.
It’s just another version of 2girls1cup or tubgirl or goaste … Ok maybe us millennials are fucked because all those examples are heinous AF compared to a little rick roll - but I mean, same concept.
Just subversion of expectation, many a joke is built on a version of that - I’d say it’s ultimately what a lot of humor derives from.
Maybe it’s not funny, it might not even be a joke and more of just a meme but if you are searching for an explanation there is one for you.
I really need to upload like 10 versions to YouTube with different thumbnails just so the “stupid” “joke” can live on.
I won’t because I’m a lazy POS that doesn’t actually care but … Yeah.
Also I know it’s a joke but I also feel like it’s a good PSA in a way that you should check what you’re clicking on, at least make sure the domain is legit (in this case it is since it’s youtube.com but idk just my random thought about the legendary >!ricki tikki tavi rolly polly!< )

11·2 months agoYou’re a silly person, aren’t ya.
Yeah fuck me for acknowledging AR glasses or other AR tech could be very useful but it’s being limited by our privacy concerns that are basically theater at this point.
Truly I am so cowardly Mr big internet man.

13·2 months agoI’m just being realistic about the future. You already are carrying around a machine that’s listening and watching. You’re walking into and out of stores where you’re on camera. Hell you’re driving past however many cameras in your car or walking past them on the street, every business, every office, every space has cameras now.
Thus, I think eventually more and more augmented reality devices will be seen because people will come to appreciate their uses outside of just being recording devices once that concern is overcome. In other words, wearing AR glasses won’t get you default labeled as some perverted weirdo.
You don’t need to bend the knee but we’re past the point where there should be any expectation of privacy in public spaces. I’m not saying I like it, I’m saying I expect our society to continue to move towards a surveillance model where privacy simply cannot be expected in any public space.
Do I think it’s dystopian and bad, yes, yes I do. I also think we need strong privacy protections for our private domiciles. That doesn’t mean my opinion is aligned with what actually is going to happen in our world.
I don’t want it but it’s what is going to happen and has been happening.

46·2 months agoThe truth is that we already are living in the surveillance state and people are just going to have to “get over” being recorded in public by anyone that walks by.
I don’t like it either. But that’s the reality we’re entering into, where privacy isn’t a right but a privilege and that privilege does not exist save for some very select (if any at this point) places like your home … Maybe.
Capitalism. Everything you described costs money to create and maintain and it generates zero (or negative) profit. Most people aren’t going to want to pay for some sort of nanny toolkit.
Don’t get me wrong, I agree with you and it should be like that. Our current systems are not going to bring that about though.

I mean some of them can fetch a pretty penny. I’d find a good local card shop if you’re interested in getting rid of them.
Or you can send them to me and I’ll take em off your hands… But seriously it might be worth it for you to take them into a shop just to see if you have anything of value.
