No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•How does a ~20% reduction in oil supply translate to a ~60% increase in price?
44·5 days agoI posted this in another thread the other day but it bears repeating.
It’s not even really about the refineries not getting any oil supply. Refineries are setup to use SPECIFIC oil feedstock chemistries, if you try to substitute that oil for a different type (light sweet vs heavy sour or mid mid, etc) the process either doesn’t work, or it wastes a significant chunk. To convert a refinery to use a different feedstock, it takes a significant amount of engineering time, then you have to effectively SHUT DOWN the whole unit, redo parts of the equipment, then run it back up, test it, and tweak the process variables. Refineries plan this years out and it takes 6+ months to do if nothing goes wrong. Then, they are basically locked into that new feedstock again.
Doing any kind of supply shock like this is dumb for any number of reasons. It’s even dumber when the critical components to rework the refineries is in shorter supply because people keep blowing up the existing equipment. Lead times on some of this stuff is in the 20+ month range duing normal times.
There will not be an easy adjustment, the 10-20% loss in supply figure is misleading at best. This is going to impact everything that uses oil, plastic, fertilizer, lubricants, valves, electronics, etc and its not going to be a 10-20% impact…

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Does cooking meat make you lose your appetite?
4·6 days agoI don’t like spatchcocking a Chicken or breaking down a whole Turkey, its a really crunchy and visceral process. Prepping crawfish or crab then boiling them is also offputting but once prepped and ready to eat, I’m not as grossed out unless I really think about it. I have found myself working to eat less meat in general for ethical/moral reasons as I have gotten older though.

3·6 days agoYep, that fixed it for me too. I had never enabled it and it was in the default mode of when necessary or something like that. Switching it to off loaded everything normally.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What was your "we have to leave now" moment?
10·8 days agoAt 3 am in the dark from inside a car you think you could tell a difference? I’ll agree the cheap stuff I had was not super realistic but I wouldn’t mess with it. It was really dumb of me to have not changed out of if at the time. People in law enforcement have really itchy triggers nowadays.

264·8 days agoIn like 2008 I was coming back from an overnight airsoft event in rural Texas at like 3am and had to stop for gas. I pulled into the only gas station in a small town just off the highway and was just about to get out of the truck when a sketchy dude walks out from behind the gas pump and started asking me questions through my window hey man, cool truck, is that yours or your parents, where you coming from? I rolled out of there real fast and found a safer stop up the road.
Keep in mind, I was in military gear at the time because I was young and dumb, but that didn’t stop sketchy McCrackhead from chatting me up.

24·14 days agoTo make it worse, I was working full time at the time. It was the only way I could get to the next course in the schedule since certain classes were only offered in certain semesters so if I had missed that window, I would have been set back a year. It was awful.

1192·14 days agoI did a summer “mini-mester” for my undergrad Fluid Mechanics class where the class was condensed into 4 or 6 weeks but you met every day and it was FUCKING BRUTAL even though I was only doing that one course. I can’t imagine doing that for a full 15hrs of coursework. This smells more like a click through the classwork once randomly, figure out the right answers from the online quiz when they pop up at the end, then click the right answers the next time type of situation but for a whole program.
How this got accredited (if it actually is) is beyond me.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Do you still listen to the radio?
5·24 days agoThe local community college has(d?) a good rock station with no ads but I am just out of range of their transmitter since we moved so I have not been able to listen for the last couple years.
In the US, the HD stations also don’t play as many or any ads, I don’t know how they are funded but its pretty cool. Mostly deep cuts or out of vogue genres. There are a couple of cool local jazz, blues, oldies or others.

Lemmy Shitpost@lemmy.world•Some things were better in the good old days
6·27 days agoThe big thing you and a lot of posters are missing is what happens when those parts aren’t made anymore. With a standard motor that uses a start capacitor, you can get that cap or motor as a generic part or from another manufacturer, if your modern appliance eats its vfd board now, you can replace it for $$$. If it dies in 8 years, its probably already been discontinued and you are sol even if you wanted to pay for it.

Lemmy Shitpost@lemmy.world•Some things were better in the good old days
8·27 days agoThanks to better manufacturing techniques, engineering analysis, and the fine humans in management, we have gotten really good at barely building a machine that lasts just long enough to be out of warranty.

Lemmy Shitpost@lemmy.world•Did you do this at your highschool?
38·1 month agoThese are both awful things to do but I was a really shitty person in highschool.
We would stretch clear plastic wrap between two lamp posts or signposts across a road in our neighborhood at night and hide in the bushes. When a car drove up, it would vaguely look like another car was on the other side because their lights would reflect off the plastic wrap so they would stop and then get out and rip the plastic wrap down of just drive through it.
The other thing we would do was to take a strip of duct tape and string it sticky side up on the road so when a car would drive by, it would stick to their tires and make it sound like a flat tire.
Kids are dumb.
The tires start out hard, then get soft and greasy before they get cooked. The Ferrari f1 team is drooling though.

2·2 months agoI still salty that my save file on the last castle got corrupted and the cart broke when I tried to replace the save battery. I have never been able to get back there again.
You also have to remember that since oil is a commodity price driven item, the producers don’t want to overproduce, that means they plan 5-10 years out on speculative demand so there is a lag of up to years before they can expand production in some cases. No one wants to spend billions of dollars increasing production capacity only for the price to fall down on its face again and burn up your investment.
A LOT of the production capacity in Corpus Christie is also about to get shut off since they (the refineries) have essentially fucked their own ability to get water required to refine the oil. The whole region is about to drain itself dry and the state isn’t doing shit to stop it.
