  • 10 years ago i bought a used PS3 for 50 bucks pretty much only for GT6. I liked it a lot and even got myself a Logitech G27 racing wheel. I remember that h-shifting with a clutch kinda sucked because of an artificial delay you needed to maintain so the shifts get registered. Like i understood the idea behind it that real cars dont shift instantly and the gears need to fall in place or whatever. But as a european i knew how to drive with a stick. At the time i havent even driven an automatic car at all. That forced delay drove me crazy.

Anyway otherwise its a great fucking game and i really want to get back in to it. But not on the og PS3. I want some upscaling and i remember it couldnt hold the framerate that well even on og hardware. The last time i checked GT6 was still kinda janky on RPCS3 but maybe its time to finally check it out.

When it comes to racing classics i had a really good time with emulated PS1 and PS2 games with retroachievements in the last two years. Colin Mcrae Rally, NFS, Midnight Club 1-3, Test Drive Eve of Destruction, Test Drive Unlimited (PS2), GT2, GT4 Spec II Mod, Enthusia etc.

The 5th and 6th gen era just has so many bangers and the emulation is just rock solid and with retro achievements i have an additional carrot on a stick to actually finish them. 7th Gen emulation is still a bit hit and miss in my experience. Atleast if you also want your games upscaled and with 60fps hacks. But the first Forza Horizon on Xenia is also pretty awesome. But needs a bit reading up and fiddling to get working alright. It actually has a good single player progression unlike later titles in the series.

TDU on the PS2 deserves its own shoutout. I would compare the driving physics to the very best the PS1 has to offer but in a PS2 game with a insanely big map for that hardware. The trade-off is a bit ugly and samey graphics but its good enough. But casually playing through the game until the big race around the whole island was a blast and took me around 10 hours. Completing every single race in the game is a bit of a drag with ~35hrs of playtime from what i’ve read. But i just didnt do that.

Enthusia is also kinda a hidden gem. The career/progression system is a bit odd imho and infirior to GT4. I cant even explain it right now. Atleast its kind of a bit of fresh air. But the driving physics are insanely good and fun.

  • idk where to find a crashcourse but here are my opinions(!) on top of my head after nearly 3 years on different instances:

    • hexbear and lemmygrad are to be avoided by all costs. weird tankies. they are blocked by most instances either way.
    • .ml(stands for marxist leninist) is the instance of the lemmy devs(i think?) and is still populated by a lot of non-lunatics. But i blocked the whole instance either way.
    • idk what the deal is with quokk.au(?) users but i noticed over the years that they tend to post weird shit/takes.
    • kbin was a fediverse alternative to lemmy. kinda fell apart a few years backs. a few instances are still around. they are alright.
    • mbin is the successor/a fork of kbin. if you want to try a different ux to lemmy its worth a look.
    • beehaw was already a pretty tightly knit community before the reddit api debacle a few years back. they have self proclaimed higher posting standards.
    • db0 is an anarchist instance. good for piracy topics. otherwise i dont care or have an opinion on them. tend to be a bit more ai tolerant i believe.
    • lemmy.world was/is the biggest instance. they get/got a lot flack for some reasons and others. most of the drama was imho pretty overblown.
    • feddit.org is an european instance. most of its users are german.
    • piefed is yet another fediverse alternative. i like it.

otherwise there is stuff like lemdroid with a focus on android or instances with a focus on anime. but tbh just start using lemmy and make your own experiences and feel free to block all the weird shit you dont want to see.

  • I had a Samsung TV over 10 years ago. One of the early “smart” ones. It got quite a few updates where a happy little text box told “your samsung smart tv got even better” or some shit like that. Even if they actively removed features and or apps got unsupportet. You know after like 2 years or so.

Like fuck it. It still works as regular ass TV till this date. But the whole software and update experience was so shit that i never bought a samsung device ever again. Wait, thats a lie. I bought two of those 25 buck dumbphones from them. They were pretty good for what they were, ngl. But apart from that Samsung is a big no-no for me and i get proven right year after year.

  • My guy,

i said mobile compute power is insane. You had a somewhat sensible take why it may not transfer to a laptop. I gave you hard facts why your concerns arent applicable. Instead of just admitting you misjudged the resolution differences you mansplain to me some irrelevant things. Yeah, the power draw is going to be different. Its a laptop, no shit. It also has tons of more space for a battery.

You are just talking out of your ass. Instead of looking up the wikipedia page for 2 minutes.

/Its also a released product. Reviews and benchmarks are readily available… Like what. Just look it up.

  • So if you’re running a larger format display with a higher resolution, cut that by quite a bit.

Funny thing is that the Macbook Neo needs to drive less pixels:

    Iphone 16 Pro: 2868 x 1320

    Macbook Neo: 2408 x 1506

Also only at 60hz and not 120hz. While having magnitudes more thermal mass to cool with the prolonged high performance bursts. I dont have any worries about its performance in its intented market segment. And yes, its running MacOS which still runs pretty well with a Macbook Air M1-M3 with 8GB of RAM.

  • I mean modern smartphone SOC compute power is insane. That wont be a bottleneck for a long time. If i had to make a guess they dont even have to go the hardware failure route for planned obsolescence. That measily 8GB of shared ram for both CPU and GPU will take care of that. Just add a bit more shiny UI bloat with every update and this thing will get slow af at some point in the future. Takes care of all the entry level M1 Airs too…
