For real, there is a line that demarcates my life into two distinct segments- before CPAP and after CPAP. It’s no joke when I describe it as a life changing event. If you’re thinking about getting checked out for it, just do it. You won’t regret it even if you do end up having to use the machine.

Technology@lemmy.world•“Sloppenheimer:” Amazon Employees Mock the Company’s AI on SlackEnglish
17·11 days agoI’d love to hear him explain his thought process behind that theory. How exactly is AI going to do all of that? Like, all of that sounds wonderful, but so does winning the lottery. How likely is all of that to happen? And what are the risks involved if it doesn’t materialize the way he envisions?
We really need to stop letting these rich fucks just talk out of their ass.
Pasta spoon. Objectively inferior to tongs as a utensil for serving spaghetti with. I’ll fight anyone who says otherwise.

Technology@lemmy.world•In first, California city overwhelmingly votes to permanently ban datacentersEnglish
7·14 days agoSpeaking from experience here, there are vastly more people employed just to build datacenters than there are to fully staff one. Hundreds of engineers, consultants, general contractors and construction laborers to build the datacenter versus maybe a dozen people at best to staff a football field sized datacenter. If datacenters go away those builders will still have jobs because they’ll just pivot to building schools or hospitals or whatever else is needed at the time. Heck, even the IT guys who work on the racks could pivot and find another role somewhere else.
The only people who will be out of a job when the AI bubble pops are the hucksters pushing it.
Crone, grant me the wisdom to understand wtf is going on in this thread…

Technology@lemmy.world•Bernie Sanders proposes bill to give the public a 50% stake in AI companiesEnglish
7·18 days agoThey already are! The government signed exclusive military contracts with OpenAI to develop autonomous weapons. Half of these AI companies are being propped up with taxpayer dollars in the form of government contracts or subsidies, or the promise that there will be a taxpayer revenue stream coming their way in the near future.
Oh no, not et cetera! That encompasses all the other things!
Lol you can see where the “I did that” sticker used to be…
Wonder if it was an old Biden version or a new Trump version.

Technology@lemmy.world•'People will buy intelligence from us on a meter': ChatGPT's Sam Altman's AI vision worries criticsEnglish
2·23 days agoIs at least in a feudalistic society. The farmers would own the their own land and there’s not much the big corporations would be able to do about that.
Sadly, in the feudal age peasants and serfs did not own the land. They worked the land and paid rent to their lord, who actually owned it.
The land is the “means of production”, and the landlords exist solely to extract value from it.
In the modern era, the digital ecosystem is a new means of production. We are the digital tenants, and they are the digital landlords. Nothing has changed, although for a brief period of time in the 90’s and early 2000’s the wall street capitalists didn’t think the internet was anything more than a fad and things were good, but e-commerce was just too lucrative for them to ignore forever.

Technology@lemmy.world•LinkedIn user hides AI prompt injection in bio to force recruitment spam to be sent in Olde English prose — bots also also manipulated to address user as ‘My Lord’English
6·1 month agoLikewise. I used to get 3-4 cold DMs or connection requests from recruiters per week just a couple years ago. Now I maybe get 1 per month.
It’s nice for me specifically, but definitely a symptom of the times and worrysome for anybody trying to find a job in this economy now while also having to compete with fucking AI slop generators doing all the menial and entry level work.
Please bind to my receptors, kthxbai

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Is there an optimal angle when using a urinal?
6·1 month agoMy technique is come in at a sharp angle, aim for the porcelain and not the water/drain/cake. 98.5% of the time this results in no discernible splashback, for me at least. If there is splashback, it’s usually due to the design of the fixture itself and I quickly adjust to compensate - some are more shallow or rounded, others are awkwardly curved or angled, and the height at which it’s mounted matters as well.
You might just be unlucky and have a super powerful stream or something. If that’s the case, you’re probably better off just sitting to pee.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What's an interesting etymology for a common term?
5·1 month agoI learned a while ago that the opposite of ambidextrous is ambisinister. The “left” origin of the word sinister gives a bit more context, as if describing someone who had two left hands!

Technology@lemmy.world•Iran mulls taking full control of all 7 undersea internet cables passing through Strait of HormuzEnglish
4·1 month agoWhat I meant by that is the ability to access the entire world interconnectivity - obviously cutting those cables would not affect domestic internet access but people who live elsewhere would not be able to access content hosted overseas in gulf states.

Technology@lemmy.world•Iran mulls taking full control of all 7 undersea internet cables passing through Strait of HormuzEnglish
153·1 month agoI don’t think Iran cares if their citizens can access the internet or not. I presume their military uses satellites for that sort of thing so they won’t be negatively affected by it.
The rest of the world, on the other hand, gets their access to worldwide connectivity held hostage.

2/3rds of my income goes just to paying rent/utilities at this point. I do have some money taken out of my check for retirement because I would be foolish not to, but at this rate it looks like retirement might not be in the cards for my generation at all. Even with the few extra bucks at the end of the pay period, it wouldn’t amount to much.
Every time I get a pay increase, it seems like the cost of living is right there on my heels, clawing back any significant gains I might have enjoyed.
