Now, of course, if you just give money away, that’s no good at improving people’s lives

Actually, no, I’m pretty sure there have been many studies that show that literally just giving poor people money is all it takes. This is the first one I found after 15 seconds of searching; I think you are really underestimating how difficult it is for poor people to just get necessities, or how difficult it is to get out of debt traps.

I see where you’re coming from. Drug addicts, gambling addicts, etc, may not be the best demographics to just give money to. But that is not most poor people. It’s a tiny fraction! Literally all we need is wealth distribution, with no need to overcomplicate things. It might not be perfect, but it would be magnitudes better than what we have now.

Edit, to be clear, I’m not saying we shouldn’t fund hospitals and schools and whatnot. But it’s simply not true that giving money away isn’t effective.

  • Oh, I didn’t realize how unclear that was. The disk is a 2TB NVME SSD. I searched and searched, even booted into Mint on another disk and tried to search from there, and could only find a few hundred GB worth of files (probably about 600GB if I had to guess, lol). I genuinely have no idea what could have been taking up nearly 1.4TB of space, so that’s all I meant when I said “only.”

My suspicion is that something was going wrong whenever I deleted anything. Maybe for some reason the data just weren’t going anywhere, even though the trash was empty and they were no longer showing up in their old locations. Hence the term “clogged.” No similar issues with Cachy just yet, though.

  • I just switched from Bazzite to Cachy today. For some reason my disk space got… clogged, with Bazzite? Filelight was no help so I backed everything up, wiped the disk, installed Cachy, replaced my files, and the disk went from being nearly full to only using 600GB. Still not sure what happened there.

Cachy, meanwhile, has asked me to update 4 times in the 4 hours I’ve been using it. Which is fine, I get that Arch is rolling release, but now on the 4th update it keep failing for some reason. Also I can’t have my headphones and speakers plugged in at the same time or my speakers don’t work.

Sigh. All this KDE stuff is nice and flashy, and my games have worked with both Bazzite and Cachy, so I appreciate that, but damn is it tough for me to make a Linux recommendation to anyone else that isn’t just “use Mint, it’s stable.” Anything more in depth turns into a mini essay (see above!)

  • Yeah, there are plenty of Jedi who can beat Anakin, but I think if you normalize for experience, he was easily the strongest of any of his peers. He should have seen being allowed to sit in on the council at his age as an enormous honor. But of course, he’s the egotist supreme, and he had unwise words being whispered in his ear.

Also, in the fight with Dooku, it seems likely to me that Palpatine somehow invisibly sabotaged him once Obi-Wan was down. Palps wanted that to end with both Dooku AND Obi-Wan dead.

    Tap for spoiler

I mean the truth is the movies are just poorly written and wildly inconsistent, but whatever lol

  • I mean, honestly, it actually might be. It’s certainly more or less how evolution did it. We’re basically programmed to have genetic drifts if the population gets too low, making more likely for the reproducing population to find a new niche. So while it would be hilariously immoral, and also probably produce A LOT more of the worst minds, you produce enough genetic freaks and eventually one of em is gonna be a megagenius
