Because they are a religion, doing religious things. Their main goal isn’t to stop harm to animals, but rather, to gain a sense of self worth by taking an unassailable moral position.
Hence, the people who make them angriest aren’t the people who hate them - but the people who ignore them.

like, it’s a system of ethics. is this like the weird inverse of religious people saying you can’t have morals without religion? atheists (presumably) saying you have to be a religion to have morals? surely you don’t actually think this in any other context
