So wait what happens to the little bits of food that come off your dishes in the dishwasher? Those go through the garbage disposal in the US. Do they not eventually clog the drain?

Well my dishwasher sucks so I always have to scrape and rinse beforehand.

But in other situations, I mean our pipes are wide enough that little bits of food aren’t going to clog, and I guess our system is good enough at flushing everything through that it just isn’t much of an issue. We have drain baskets in our kitchen sink drains that filter out larger debris, too. I’m also new to having a dishwasher, I hand washed everything up until a few months ago, so someone else might have better answers than me.

That’s fair. FWIW I think it’s the pipe that drains from the dishwasher to the garbage disposal that seems to clog the most because it is pretty narrow. Scraping beforehand is probably a good idea even with a garbage disposal.
