  • IIRC it was that anything like ray bans were identical to cheap UV blockers, but there’s a tier at about a hundred bucks (or maybe 150) that use a different method for applying the coating to the lens so that it lasts longer. I think it was in the buy it for life sub bc I get the cheap ones and the lenses don’t last very long for me (as in they get scuffed up despite the fact that I put them back in the case every time I wear them).

I’ll see if I can find the thread when I have time later

  • Yeah I think it’s conflating rate with current numbers. Now it’s like 15% but in the overall population there are prob about 58% who are cut currently because the rates used to be so high.

Even the US rate is less than 80% right now. The graphic is labeled 2016 though.

  • Since English doesn’t have codified politeness levels in grammatical structures (like Japanese does with eg verb endings, where tabe-ru is less polite than tabe-masu for the same verb meaning “eat”), we tend to make requests longer the more polite we’re being.

    For example:

    1. Bring me that.
    2. Hey/Yo, bring me that.
    3. Can you bring me that?
    4. Could you bring me that?
    5. Would you mind bringing me that?
    6. When you get a chance could you bring me that?
    7. If if fits into your schedule I’d appreciate it if you could bring me that.
    8. I know you’re really busy but it would really help me out a lot if you could bring me that.

With close friends the first one is ok(ish) if your tone isn’t too commanding, but I’d normally stick to 2 through 4 (or 5). For some reason a “please” sounds overly polite whereas a “thanks” upon receiving the request doesn’t. I imagine this is different for other regions. I’m from the US northeast, but people from the south probably feel differently.

  • I should probably do that. Feels like you can scrub your fingers pretty decently after cutting peppers, and there’s still a bit of residual burn when you touch sensitive areas. Maybe it depends on the spice level of the pepper, but I don’t generally go above habs for eating raw, so it’s not like I’m chopping reapers or even ghosts.

  • Didn’t some games in the DOS era use a lot of base memory? Like to the point that after RAM was a thing there wasn’t enough base memory to run them. I seem to recall trying to run Elite (Frontier 2) and on a computer with Win95 or maybe 98 and it said there wasn’t enough memory.

There were even old programs like doublespsce that would free up some base memory for more memory intensive games
