Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Have you ever camped out or queued up for the launch of a game, console, or other media?English
6·5 days agoI did not camp out myself, but I did work a register when some early World of Warcraft expansions came out. People went crazy for them.
I remember one evening we had some Wrath of the Lich King collector’s editions available for the release event and there was a huge rush to get in when they opened the doors. I had this sweet old lady come through my line with one of the big boxes. She was very excited because she bought it for her grandson and she wanted to give him a special gift. She was all smiles.
A few minutes later, I had a guy come through my line. He looked a little flustered and had a regular edition in his hand. He said some old lady ran up, pushed him out of the way, hit him with her purse, then grabbed the last collector’s edition and ran to the front.
Pretty sure my sweet old lady customer was the same one that hit him with her purse lol. It was a weird night.

Horses are never pleased. You arnt giving them enough treats.
Sounds just like my rabbits with their perpetual frowns. I guess horses and rabbits are more similar than I thought.

3·8 days agoWhat a bunch of cuties! Thank you for sharing :)
I changed all of my browser search engines to this and it’s been great!
Actually, I have cuddled with someone I love while reading, just not the same book at the same time. I don’t like anyone reading over my shoulder because it makes me feel like I have to read too quickly and I end up forgetting what I read. I am a slower reader because I have an internal narrator that reads every single word, but I read every day.
I love when a book really hooks me, but I would hate having someone read over my shoulder like that.
My limit is that is not alive when served and balut. I will try pretty much anything else for the most part.
I’m an adventurous eater and I would definitely eat that, but there are only a handful of things I won’t try.

4·19 days agoThat’s actually a great idea…I don’t mean actually lick their feet but wet a paper towel or napkin and wipe it on the bottoms of their feet to gross them out.
Ooo or better, wipe their feet with those sanitizing wipes
Completely different reason, but I felt that same satisfaction when my dad died of a painful stomach cancer. Shit head abandoned his wife and kids for his affair partner and her 4 kids. He did a bunch of stupid shit because he was a stupid shit. I was sad for my aunts because they lost their brother, but his death has made me closer to them so that’s a win 🤷♀️
Otherwise, it was so satisfying knowing that he died in pain without his own children or hers there. I don’t feel guilty for feeling that and neither should you 💚
The small space on the back of my bunny’s head, right in between their ears. My first boy smelled so good and he loved when I did that. It smells even better when they have been sitting next to a window, my current boy is a lionhead mix and that spot always smells so good.
My tiny girl is very sassy and doesn’t let me smell her much, but once in a while she will. It’s always the best smell.
I have started to recognize a quite a few folks here and there. Most I recognize for good posts/comments. Even a few that I don’t necessarily agree with, but they are respectful and thoughtful in their replies.
A couple I recognize for not so great reasons, but this space is pretty small so I try not to block folks unless they are outright awful. For most in this category, I just tag and avoid replying to them in the future rather than blocking.
Spiders are extremely fascinating and I wish more people would take an interest in them. They are mostly harmless and fear of them is irrational and illogical.
They are such a diverse group and have so many important functions in nature. There are some really cool ones out there like the lynx spiders or garden orb weavers like Argiope argentata. They are so fun to watch catch insects and go about their little spider lives. They are just so fucking cool.
Especially the green lynx spider ladies. They are my absolute favorite and such little badasses :)
Honestly, I provided the links because I was in a rush to go to a book crawl. I was hoping you were curious enough to read them out of genuine interest because there is plenty of relevant information there. But I saw your other comments on this post and I have more important things to do than waste my time with a misogynistic troll. I’m going to go read and take pictures of spiders.
You have yourself a wonderful day ✌️
Ok man. I offered plenty of articles for you to read through, but obviously sexism is just a thing of the past and is not relevant today at all.
I’ve only been a woman experiencing this for over 40 years, but whatever. Have a nice day ✌️
The short answer: sexism and money
The long answer:
Sexism: Women’s clothing is seen from an aesthetic view and not a utility view. Women’s pockets give us independence and since women were seen as property for so long, we did not need pockets to hold our items. Men’s clothing is about utility and practicality because men need to hold important items in their day to day. Women’s clothing is seen as just about fashion because women just want to be pretty, which reflects how some view women’s place in the world “be pretty, attract man, find husband, make babies”. Fewer pockets means women have to carry more with our hands which leads to less freedom of movement and less independence.
Money: Fashion companies make tens of billions selling women purses. If women had real pockets, we may not need purses. This is also why fast fashion is aimed at women, our clothing is of lesser quality so we are required to buy clothing more frequently. Women’s clothes are considered a loss leader to sell more cheap accessories.
The thing is, instead of arguing that women don’t really want pockets, you should listen and acknowledge what we are asking for. Times are changing, pockets are becoming larger in women’s clothes because women are demanding them, because we are being more selective and purchasing the few options with pockets that we have. Not as many companies are taking advantage of that ask because they want to sell purses, but the change is happening. You should also be advocating for that change.
The book I linked to above goes into great detail about the history of pockets in general, then provides information on why women’s pockets not only don’t exist as they should, but have actually been taken away from us as we gained independence (during WW2 when women had to work because men were fighting, women’s clothing had more pockets). If you don’t want to read the book, here are a number of shorter articles that provide the same information.

Great quotes in the above article: Though perhaps no one has put it better than Indiana University professor Christopher Todd Matthews, who writes in the academic article “Form and Deformity: The Trouble With Victorian Pockets” that Victorian women were told that they “had four external bulges already — two breasts and two hips — and a money pocket inside their dress would make an ungainly fifth.”
“Essentially: Men are required to act and therefore need practical clothing. Women are expected to simply appear and be watched — their beauty prioritized above all else. And these outdated gender ideals are still being sewn directly into our clothing”
